A teenage mother has been arrested and charged with beating her 26-day-old son to death in North Carolina.
Daniela Villarreal, 17, will face charges of murder and felony child abuse following her son’s death on Tuesday. Police responded to a 911 call from the mother’s home around 4:20 am on Tuesday.
Villarreal’s son, Luis Miguel Jr., was rushed to the hospital by paramedics but was pronounced dead after arriving by doctors at Carolinas Medical Center-University.
According to the Charlotte Observer, an investigation has revealed that the newborn’s death was caused by physical assault. Villarreal voluntarily went to speak with police Tuesday night and was arrested after the interview.
Villarreal appeared to be excited about having the baby based on numerous photos she posted on her Facebook page throughout her pregnancy. However, she posted a status in September saying that she regrets she cannot work or take classes because of her unborn child.
“Cant wait til this little Boy comes and Im able to do what i want!! I want to be successful in life!!” Villarreal wrote. She also wrote that her goal was to “get stacks” so she could help her son out.
Police will continue to investigate the crime further. The young mother faces significant prison time if she is convicted.
