A man from Argentina has been arrested afterstabbing his ex-girlfriend to death in front of an entire classroom full of children.
Mauro Bongiovanni, 49, escaped from a psychiatric hospital and attacked 44-year-old Maria Eugenia Lancetti, a nursery school teacher from Cordoba, Argentina.
Bongiovanni, a former businessman, was admitted to the hospital after exhibiting violent behavior, according to Mirror.
Lancetti reported her boyfriend to authorities following a domestic abuse incident in which he attacked and injured her. Police gave the mother of two a panic alarm, but she was not quick enough to use it, according to witnesses.
“It all happened so fast,” a school staff member said. “We heard screams coming from her classroom and ran in to see him attacking her with a knife.
“We immediately called police and he ran off but it was too late for Maria. The children were obviously very traumatized, having witnessed the attack.”
Police were on the scene quickly after teachers raised the school alarm. They arrested Bongiovanni and siezed the murder weapon, a knife, as evidence.
The killer is currently undergoing psychiatric testing as prosecutors attempt to determine if he is fit to stand trial.
Lancetti is survived by her two children, ages 17 and 21.
