A Florida pedophile has been arrested just 18 months after being released from prison, this time for molesting at least seven children in his apartment.
Michael Shepard, 35, lied to neighbors about his sex offender history to convince them to allow him to babysit their young children.
Shepard recently finished a 15 year prison term he received for molesting two young boys at a roller rink in 1998. He was required to notify the children’s parents about his sex offender status, which he did. However, Shepard told parents he went to prison for being in a “Romeo and Juliet romance” with a preacher’s daughter.
Authorities say Shepard did everything he could to gain the parents trust, which he then broke by abusing at least seven young children, both boys and girls, whose ages ranged between five and 12.
Parents trusted Shepard so much that a few even let the kids sleep at his apartment. The pedophile would use video games, candy, and fast food to get the children back to his apartment or to his “hideout” in the woods, where he forced them to perform a variety of sex acts.
Prosecutors filed a motion under the Jimmy Ryce Act, a Florida law that lengthens sentencing for sex offenders if they are likely to re-offend, Daily Mail reported.
However, a psychologist testified that Shepard was not likely to re-offend after being released, testimony that proved dangerously wrong.
Another testified saying that Shepard was “straddling the fence” on whether his prison term should be extended or not.
In addition to the crimes for which he was convicted, Shepard was caught having sex with inmates during his 15 year term.
