In Santa Ana, three 13-year-old girls were struck and killed by an SUV.
Police believe that the vehicle, a Honda CRV, was driving 50 mph in a 25 mph zone. The hit and run occurred around 6:45 p.m., and all three of the girls were killed on impact. Police have estimated that the girls were thrown over 100 feet after impact.
“We do have a witness that followed the vehicle for a short period of time and eventually led us to where the vehicle is parked now,” said Santa Ana Police Chief Carlos Rojas.
Halloween is generally one of the deadliest nights of the year. According to CNN, statistics from two years ago revealed that “48% of all crash fatalities during Halloween involved a drunken driver, compared with 31% on an average day in the same year.”
There were other Halloween related deaths throughout the country. In Lake Wales, Florida, a 2-year-old boy was struck and killed by a bus along the U.S. Highway 27 when he accidently left his stroller. In Greece, New York, a 16-year-old was severely injured and a 3-year-old was killed. In this incident, the car stopped and police are currently investigating.
In Winnetka, Illinois, a 3-year-old boy was struck and dragged by a car, but is recovering from his injuries and is listed in good condition. A group of five people in Phoenix were also hit by a vehicle. One adult suffered minor injuries, the other four; a 23-year-old woman, a 25-year-old man, a 10-year-old girl, and a 2-year-old boy are all listed in critical condition.
